HOD's Welcome Message
The Department was established as one of the Pre-clinical Departments of the Faculty of Medicine in 1967. It’s mandate then was to partake in the training of Medical students during their pre-clinical years. However, the Department has expanded its academic activities towards training of students in the field of Human Physiology at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels in 1987. Also, the Department is currently serving the following Faculty and Departments in the University, namely – Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Nursing Science, Human Anatomy and Physical Health Education. The Department currently have a vibrant research activities in the areas of Endocrine Physiology, Neurophysiology, Gastrointestinal physiology and Cardiopulmonary Physiology.
The mission of the department of Human physiology is to provide an outstanding educational experience that prepares students for careers in the medical and allied sciences through excellence in teaching and research that addresses important issues in our immediate community and beyond.
The vision of the department is to be foremost in teaching and research, through promoting the department, staff, student and alumni engagement that enhances the advancement of the department and community understanding of our academic expertise.
The Department is to produce specialized personnel to meet the country’s high demand for professional physiologists to service the medical and allied health sciences; in medical research institutes; and in agencies concerned with climatic stress, other aspects of environmental physiology, sports medicine, nutrition and population control.
